Maharashtra Housing Minister Jitendra Awhad on Friday, March 25, clarified that the legislators will not get the residences for free in Mumbai.

The Maharashtra government on Thursday, March 24, announced construction of 300 homes by Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) in suburban Goregaon for MLAs from rural areas. These would be High Income Group (HIG) category flats.

The housing development minister said the MLAs concerned will have to pay for the homes, expected to cost INR 70 lakh each. There is noise over the homes which will be built for MLAs. I would like to clarify that the homes will not be given for free. The land price + construction cost (expected expenses INR 70 lakh) will be recovered from the MLAs concerned, he tweeted.

This statement came after several leaders from across the party criticised this move by the Maharashtra government.

"Why MLAs get free houses? You make announcements but the whopping amount of money used here are given by the citizens. Instead, give 200 units of free electricity to the common man and get the blessings of the people," Raju Patil tweeted.

On the other hand, MNS leader Sandeep Deshpande posing a question on this scheme said: "Since the government is in turmoil, why do you want to give houses to MLAs as a bait? Why free houses for MLAs when many issues of common people are pending?"
