Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Sunday said that a resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR) was unlikely to be passed in the ongoing Maharashtra budget session.

While speaking at the party convention, senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar stated that there was no need for a resolution against the CAA and the proposed NRC, NPR because there was nothing to fear regarding the same.

“The CAA, NRC and NPR will not take away anyone’s citizenship,” Pawar asserted while adding that people were spreading “misinformation”.

“People of Maharashtra should not be scared of CAA, NRC and NPR. If anyone tries to create misconception, the NCP workers should tell them that Sharad Pawar and other MVA ministers have given their word that no one’s citizenship in Maharashtra will be affected,” Deputy CM Ajit Pawar said.

Pawar also called for more awareness on the issue and stated that there was no need for a Bihar-led resolution against CAA, NRC and NPR in Maharashtra.

Earlier, the Bihar legislative assembly unanimously passed a resolution against the implementation of NRC and favoured the 2019 manual for updating the NPR.

In Maharashtra, NCP chief Sharad Pawar had earlier called the CAA, NPR and NRC as “divisive” while Congress has clearly maintained that the NPR is “NRC is disguise”.  However, Maharashtra Chief Minister had informed that the NRC will not be implemented in the state while stating that his government won’t block the implementation of NPR.

Earlier, CM Thackeray had assured Congress leader Naseem Khan that the decision on the implementation of CAA and the proposed NRC and NPR will be taken after discussion with the members of MVA government.
