The Maharashtra government on Friday said that there will no market set up for the purchase of cattle for ‘Qurbani’ ahead of the Eid-ul-Adha or Bakra Eid. The government said that all operating livestock markets will remain shut to avoid crowding amid the coronavirus pandemic. 

“All operating livestock markets will remain closed. If citizens want to buy animals, they should but it online or by phone,” the government said. 

The Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government further suggested the Eid prayers should be offered at home instead of Mosques or public places. “Bakri Eid prayers should not be offered in mosques or Eidgahs or public places, but should be done at home only,” ANI reported. 

Earlier, Maharashtra Minister for Textiles and Fisheries, Aslam Shaikh informed that the Maharashtra government is planning to initiate the online purchase of animals including goats and sheep for sacrifice to avoid crowding ahead of the Eid-ul-Adha or Bakra Eid.

He also clarified that the celebrations for any festival will not be allowed in containment zones demarcated by the administration due to the coronavirus outbreak.

On Tuesday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray urged the Muslim community to celebrate Eid-ul-Adha in a simple manner. The Bakra Eid is likely to be celebrated on August 1 and the Chief Minister urged people to celebrate the festival “symbolically”. 

As of July 16, Maharashtra remains one the worst hit-states in India due to the coronavirus outbreak with 2,84,281 COVID-19 cases while the death toll has touched 11,194. In Mumbai, the number of coronavirus cases has increased to 97,950 and nearly 5,523 fatalities have been reported. On Thursday, Maharashtra reported 8,641 fresh COVID-19 cases and 266 deaths.
