Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday urged the Muslim community to celebrate Eid-ul-Adha in a simple manner. The Bakra Eid is likely to be celebrated on August 1 and the Chief Minister has urged people to celebrate the festival “symbolically” if possible.

Thackeray made the appeal during a video conference which was attended by public representatives including MLAs from the Muslim community along with cabinet ministers including Ajit Pawar, Nawab Malik and Anil Deshmukh.

The Chief Minister said that all festivals of every religion have been celebrated in a restricted manner earlier during the lockdown in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. “The coming celebration for Bakra Eid should also be celebrated simply and in a symbolic manner while following the protocols,” Thackeray added.

Thackeray appealed people to not avoid crowding during the festival and reminded that the challenge to tackle the pandemic still remains. Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh also reiterated that the Bakrid should be celebrated in a simple manner and said that the festivities can’t be allowed given the stress on police to enforce the lockdown.

The Chief Minister also said that there should be no insistence to change the provision for opening market places for purchasing goats for Bakr Eid. However, the state government is likely to allow online selling and buying of goats to avoid crowding.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is also expected to set up markets across Mumbai to buy goats so that the crowding doesn’t take place or else the efforts to contain COVID-19 outbreak will go to waste.

It has been demanded that the government creates temporary abattoirs to conduct ritualist slaughter of animals since the current laws state that the slaughter can only happen in abattoirs.
