Maharashtra sends 98 names for Padma Awards; Centre selects one for Padma Shri

Out of 98 names recommended by the Maharashtra government, only one person - senior social activist Sindhutai Sapkal, has been chosen for the Padma Shri this year.

The Government of India, on the eve of Republic Day 2021, announced the Padma Awards for the people who have performed outstanding work in various fields. This year, Padma awards have been announced to 119 dignitaries, and it includes six people from Maharashtra.

However, reports state that only one out of the 98 names recommended by the Thackeray government has been chosen. This year, senior social activist Sindhutai Sapkal has been awarded the Padma Shri, and the other 97 names have not been considered by the Centre. The government also recommended the Padma Bhushan be given to Sindhutai, but, the Centre has decided to honour her with Padma Shri.

As per the list, Rajinikanth Devidas Shroff will be given the Padma Bhushan, and Girish Prabhune, Namdev Kamble, Parashuram Atmaram Gangawane, Jaswantiben Popat, Sindhutai Sapkal will be given the Padma Shri.

The state government had nominated world-renowned businessman Mukesh Ambani, senior cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, and HDFC Bank chairman Deepak Parekh for the Padma Vibhushan award. Besides them, Sindhutai Sapkal, Serum Institute CEO Adar Poonawala, Professional Skydiver Sheetal Mahajan, Actress Madhuri Dixit, Actor Mohan Agashe, Late. Rajarambapu Patil and Dr Milind Kirtan's were recommended for Padma Bhushan, and the list with these names was sent in September 2020.

The government had also recommended the award for Sanjay Raut, Yashwantrao Gadakh, Dr Jagannath Dixit, Madhukar Bhave, Maruti Chitampally, Aniruddha Jadhav, Prakash Khandge, Vijaya Wad, Sadanand More, Shivram Rege (posthumous), Sh.
