Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar and his family including Supriya Sule have cancelled the annual programme ahead of Diwali this year to avoid the spread of the coronavirus.
Pawar and his entire family gather at their home each year in Baramati. During the annual event, people across the state come to greet and meet the Pawar family. However, the programme stands cancelled this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.
NCP MP Supriya Sule, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, NCP MLA Rohit Pawar issued a joint statement announcing the cancellation of the programme. The statement states that the Pawar family will avoid celebrating Diwali with the public this year to avoid the spread of COVID-19 among local residents.
Those who come all the way to Baramati to meet the family should send greetings from their respective homes, the statement read while adding that Diwali will be celebrated enthusiastically next year after the pandemic ends.
While urging the public to take preventive measures during Diwali celebrations, the Pawar family said that they can’t meet the well-wishers this Diwali as there was a need to follow rules to stop the spread of COVID-19.
“We need to have the patience for some more time and follow preventive measures,” the statement said.
Ajit Pawar has recently recovered from the coronavirus and remained in isolation for a week after being discharged from the hospital. Pawar had complained of feeling tired after his visit to Solapur. While the Deputy CM tested positive, he remained asymptomatic and got himself admitted as a precautionary measure on his doctor's advice.
