Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the nation at 8:00 PM on Tuesday and is likely to talk about the lockdown extension and easing restrictions gradually to boost economic activities. This comes a day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a virtual meeting with the Chief Ministers of all states to discuss that the lockdown to contain the spread of the coronavirus should be gradually lifted.

While hinting at a lockdown extension, PM Modi on Monday asked the states to submit their suggestions on opening the economy along with their recommendations for an exit from the lockdown by May 15.

During the meeting, Narendra Modi said that there are two challenges - to reduce the transmission rate of the COVID-19 and to gradually increase public activity. The fight against COVID-19 has to be more focused now since the economic activities have started in several parts of the country, he added.

While interacting with the PM, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray suggested that more relaxations in the lockdown should be announced rather than lifting it all together while pointing out the studies show that COVID-19 cases are likely to peak in June or July.

“The Prime Minister should show us specific and concrete direction on lockdown, the states will implement the same,” Thackeray told PM Modi.

India has been under lockdown in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic since March 25. The lockdown 2.0 was announced on April 14 while the third nationwide lockdown was placed by centre till May 17.

It should be noted that the Indian railway opened booking for passenger services from Tuesday with 15 trains a day. These trains will connect Delhi to Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata and other big cities. The decision taken by the Indian Railways hints towards easing of lockdown restrictions. However, it is not confirmed if the same will be extended.

Earlier, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray hinted toward extending the lockdown in Mumbai and Pune till May 30. In an all-party meeting with the opposition leaders in the state, Thackeray informed that the state has surpassed one of the crucial stages in April, but had to face two more stages in this COVID-19 outbreak.
