Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Eknath Khadse is set to join the Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) after months of being estranged with the state leadership.

Maharashtra NCP President, and state water resources minister, Jayant Patil informed that Khadse has quit the BJP and will join NCP on Friday. This comes as a huge blow to the BJP in Maharashtra. Khadse has a major following in the Jalgaon district of northern Maharashtra.

There were speculations from the past few days that Khadse is likely to join the NCP. These speculations were fuelled earlier after Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh talked about it.

On Wednesday, Patil said Khadse informed him that he has quit the BJP and will come to NCP fold on Friday. Khadse played an important role in strengthening BJP’s hold in Maharashtra but he was being mistreated by his party, the NCP leader said.

Khadse, a veteran politician, has decided to join the NCP and will be officially inducted in the Sharad Pawar-led party on Friday around 2:00 in the afternoon.

Patil further informed that many leaders along with Khadse are willing to leave the BJP and join the NCP. However, it will not be right to hold assembly elections amid the coronavirus outbreak. Therefore, these leaders will be gradually admitted to the NCP.

“Any MLA or leader who wants to join NCP will be inducted publicly and not secretly. There’s no doubt that the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government will run for the next five years,” Patil said.
