Maharashtra Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Ashok Chavan has levelled serious allegations against some politicians saying that they have joined the Maratha movement for reservation and are creating a rift between the Maratha and Other Backward Class (OBC) community.

Chavan, head of the cabinet sub-committee, was speaking at a press conference in Mumbai. He said that the Maharashtra government was focusing on giving independent reservation to Maratha community. He said that there was no question of providing reservation to Marathas under the OBC category.

The Maharashtra government earlier passed the reservation law providing 16 per cent reservation to the Maratha community in government jobs and education under Socially and Educationally Backward Class (SEBC) category.

Chavan said that some people are causing misunderstanding among the people from the Maratha community. The minister alleged a conspiracy to gain political advantage by creating tension between OBC and Maratha community.

The allegations made against the Maharashtra government that it is not serious about the Maratha reservation issue are wrong, Chavan said while adding that the government has hired senior advocates like Kapil Sibal, Mukul Rohtagi, Abhishek Manu Singhvi to argue the matter.

The interim stay on the implementation of Maratha reservation has affected recruitment and admission process of the state government. Chavan said that the state government is working out for a solution so that students don’t waste their academic year.

On Monday, the Maharashtra government moved the third application before the Supreme Court requesting to set up a constitutional bench to start the hearing for the Maratha reservation issue.
