Earlier, Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghtana (SSS) chief, Raju Shetti had warned the state ministry that if the government does not credit ₹5 daily as a subsidy to the farmers who work in the dairy sector then he, along with the farmers will protest and stop the milk supply after July 16, 2018.

In response to Shetti's statement, Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil criticised him saying that Mumbai is not Pakistan and also challenged him to stop the milk supply.

The government had passed an ordinance stating that the farmers selling milk at ₹17 can sell the milk at ₹27. However, so far the ordinance has not been put in implementation which has agitated the farmers and as a result, they are protesting. Prior to this movement, the State Milk Producers’ Sangharsh Samiti had also protested against the government regarding the injustice against farmers in the dairy sector.

The SSS chief said that milk is being sold at ₹34 statewide and the farmers get only ₹17 for the sale which is a clear injustice. Hence, he declared that if the farmers aren’t given the ₹5 subsidy in their bank accounts, then they (SSS) will protest.

Shetti said that after July 16, they won’t let a single milk vehicle enter Mumbai and will halt the vehicles at the outskirts of Mumbai on the highways. If Shetti to be believed, Mumbai might feel milk shortage post-July 16, 2018.
