Objection raised against Thackeray-faction's 'Mashaal' symbol; Samata Party writes to EC.

Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray-led faction, Shiv Sena, which recently got the symbol of burning torch has already become a part of the controversy, a few days within the announcement of its new name. As per reports, the Samata Party formed by the  late leader George Fernandes has claimed the torch symbol already.

An email regarding the same was sent by the Samata Party members to the Election Commission claiming their right for the symbol.

Recently, Shiv Sena party was split into two groups, one led by CM Eknath Shinde and the other by former CM Uddhav Thackeray. After a long controversy and months of rivalry, the Shinde-faction claimed the control of the the Shiv Sena party, however, the Election Commission, while banning either of the parties from using the original, froze the election symbol Dhanushyaban. Owing to this, both groups were then given electoral symbols and names.

The Shiv Sena group led by Uddhav Thackeray Thackeray faction was given the torch symbol by the Election Commission. Meanwhile, the torch symbol was earlier given to the Samata Party, however, in 2004, the Election Commission, while canceling the recognition of this party as a regional party, released the symbol making it available for other parties to claim. Keeping this in mind, the authorities, have now given the symbol of Mashal to the Thackeray group.

Nothing this, Samata Party has once again come forward to claim the election symbol and responding to the same, State President of Samata Party Trinesh Devlekar, while talking to a media said that George Fernandes founded Samata Party in 1994, and later was given the torch symbol in 1996. However, now that the EC has given the symbol to the Thackeray group, officials are now saying that Samata Party's election symbol had been withdrawn. Claiming their right over the same, an email has been sent the Election Commission to get the torch symbol, but no response has been received yet. 

Adding more, he said that there was a possibility of a difference in opinion keeping the similarity of the symbol in mind, however, members of the party have requested to not assign this torch symbol to others. Devlekar further mentioned that Samata Party will field a candidate in the Andheri East in the upcoming by-election as they have a strong candidate. On being asked more about the same, he did not comment on who this candidate would be.
