In what has caused a political stir in Maharashtra, Shiv Sena MLA representing Buldhana, Sanjay Gaikwad, was found saying that he would like to push the coronavirus into the mouth of the leader of the opposition (BJP) in the state assembly and former Maharashtra Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis

Gaikwad made the comment on Sunday following which there was a clash between Shiv Sena and BJP employees in Buldhana. “If I get a hand on the coronavirus, I would put it in Fadnavis’s mouth,” the MLA had said prior to the clash.

Talking about the clash that ensued between BJP and his party workers, Gaikwad said that the incident took place because 25 BJP workers gathered at a site to burn his effigy. He added that his supporters “snatched away the effigy” following which the tussle took place.

He clarified that police cases were filed against members of both parties while justifying his workers’ presence. “My supporters only went there as a response to their presence,” he said while pointing fingers at BJP party workers gathering at the spot despite COVID-19 restrictions.

BJP workers have called for an apology and arrest of Gaikwad following his comment. However, Gaikwad has refused to apologize and justified the language used by saying that his words were a reflection of the anger and frustration of the people.

“Everyone has seen the dirty politics [over Covid-19] which the BJP is playing with Maharashtra and Fadnavis is the face of it,” he was quoted as saying.

“It is Fadnavis and his party leaders who are creating a false impression in the minds of people about our government. Fadnavis has been speaking so much against Maharashtra that he has shamed the entire state,” Gaikwad added.

Chandrashekhar Bawankule of the BJP, who was also the State Energy Minister during Fadnavis’ tenure as CM said that Gaikwad may be in need of treatment. “Even though his party is in power, he’s acting like the opposition and blaming the BJP for problems, which have in fact been caused by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA),” he added.

BJP MLC from Nagpur, Girish Vyas said that Gaikwad’s comments show that the government is frustrated with itself. “Just to hide their failure, their MLAs have now started to play the blame game. Regardless, Gaikwad is a political nobody and his statements are unparliamentary,” he said.
