Shiv Sena on Tuesday moved a breach of privilege motion against Republic TV Managing Director and Editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for making baseless remarks against Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar.

Another privilege motion was moved against Actress Kangana Ranaut in Maharashtra Legislative Council for comparing Mumbai with Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK).

On the second day of the monsoon session of Maharashtra Legislature, Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik moved a breach of motion against Goswami in the assembly for using “derogatory language” and insulting the ministers and elected representative. Meanwhile, Shiv Sena’s Manish Kayande moved a similar motion against Ranaut in the council.

While addressing the Vidhan Sabha, Sarnaik accused Goswami of levelling unfounded allegations against many in the Sushant Singh Rajput death case. The Shiv Sena MLA has demanded that the house initiate strict action against the Republic TV Editor-in-chief.

However, the same was opposed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Devendra Fadnavis, Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, labelled this as muzzling voices of dissent in the media and accused the Uddhav Thackeray government of adopting two-faced approach on the issue of freedom of expression.

Reacting to the objections raised by BJP in the house, Anil Parab - Minister of Parliamentary Affairs - backed the privilege motion while urging the chair to accept it. He slammed the opposition saying they feel angry when Prime Minister Narendra Modi is targeted but don’t feel the same for the Chief Minister.

NCP MLA Chhagan Bhujbal and Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Abu Asim Azmi also backed the motion saying that there has to be some discipline in practising free speech.
