Shiv Sena has listed Bollywood Actress Urmila Matondkar’s name for the nomination to the legislative council through Governor’s quota. Each ruling party in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government including Congress, Shiv Sena and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) have named four members from their party.

Reacting to this, Shiv Sena chief spokesperson Sanjay Raut said that the cabinet decides which names are to be recommended to the Governor for nomination to the legislative council.

“Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has given powers to the cabinet. Thackeray will take a final decision on whose name should be recommended from Shiv Sena,” Raut said.

It is being said that Thackeray himself had a conversation with Matondkar over the phone. The three parties have submitted the names to the Chief Minister keeping it a secret. However, the sources have confirmed that Sena has nominated Matondkar for the legislative council seat.

12 seats of the legislative council have been vacant since April and June as their term expired. The Maharashtra Legislative Council has a total of 78 members out of which 12 are nominated by the governor.

The term for all 12 nominated legislative council seats by the governor ended in June. Of these 12 seats, legislators on 10 seats already retired on June 6 while the term of remaining two expired on June 15.

Urmila Matondkar had contested the 2019 Lok Sabha elections from North Mumbai Lok Sabha constituency on a Congress ticket. However, she was defeated by BJP's Gopal Shetty.

Later, Matondkar resigned from Congress citing “petty in-house politics”. The renowned actress also jumped in to criticise Kangana Ranaut for comparing Mumbai with Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK).
