Shiv Sena on Monday lashed out at Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari over his stand to conduct the examination of final year university students in the state and said that the health of students can’t be jeopardised amid coronavirus outbreak.

In an editorial published in Shiv Sena’s mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, Shiv Sena asked when the student wing of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) - Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) - has already opposed holding exams in Gujarat and Goa amid the current situation, why was Koshyari in favour of the same.

“Is this because the RSS-backed BJP is not in power in Maharashtra?” the editorial read.

Governor Koshyari is the chancellor of universities in Maharashtra and had written to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray earlier asking him to resolve the issue of conducting final year university exams in the state.

In his letter to Thackeray, Koshyari said that the delay in conducting exams was not in the interest of students and not conducting the final year examination by universities was in breach of University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines.

The Governor raised objection to the demands made by Maharashtra Higher and Technical Education Minister Uday Samant to the UGC for cancellation of final year university exams. However, it is editorial, Shiv Sena defended the minister and said he was expressing his opinion on the issue.

Shiv Sena said that the demands made by the Governor were genuine and examinations were important for the future of 10 lakh students but the health of students can’t be put to risk in the wake of coronavirus outbreak.

The editorial further stated that when almost all institutions are stretched to limits, the governor was expecting universities to overcome the challenges of COVID-19 crisis and hold exams.

Major cities in Maharashtra including Mumbai, Pune, Aurangabad where the prominent universities are situated were under the grip of COVID-19, the editorial said.

Earlier on Saturday, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut had met Governor Koshyari and the meeting was labelled as a “courtesy call” by the Raj Bhavan. This happened days after Thackeray skipped a review meeting with Koshyari and sent Shiv Sena leader Milind Narvekar on his behalf.
