A day after the Congress demanded a memorial for legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar at Shivaji Park, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) spokesperson Sandeep Deshpande on Tuesday, February 8, said that the historic place should not be held hostage to ugly party politics.

Taking to Twitter, the MNS secretary Deshpande wrote, “Dadar residents have fought for long to protect the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park from encroachment. They want the park to remain an open playground. It is my ardent appeal that Shivaji Park should not be sacrificed for petty party politics.”

On Monday, January 7, Maharashtra BJP MLA Ram Kadam wrote to state Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, requesting that a memorial of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar be made in Mumbai at Dadar’s Shivaji Park.

Mangeshkar was cremated at the park on Sunday, January 6 with full state honours. Presently, there is a Balasaheb Thackeray memorial at the Shivaji Park. Kadam has now asked that one also be made for the veteran singer.

Kadam took to Twitter saying, “Chief Minister @OfficeofUT ji After India's greatest singer #Latadidi has been laid to rest at the Shivaji Park, a more fitting tribute to nation's pride will be to have a #memorial dedicated to #LataDidi ji at the very same iconic ground.” He added, “Earnestly request you to make a #memorial dedicated to #Lataji at #Shivaji Park.”

Kadam’s letter stated that after Mangeshkar was laid to rest at Shivaji Park, a more fitting tribute will be to have a memorial dedicated to her at the same ground. He believes it will act as an emotional place wherein fans can pay their homage to her.

Kadam through his letter remarked that this has been “a growing chorus amongst Lataji’s fans worldwide”.

To pay tribute to Mangeshkar, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra government has declared a public holiday on Monday, February 7 to mourn her demise.
