After Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari mocked Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray as ‘secular’, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar on Tuesday wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and expressed displeasure over the language used by Koshyari.

In his letter to Modi, Pawar said that he was “shocked and surprised” to see Governor’s letter released to the media and the kind of language used in it.

“I agree that the Governor can have his independent views and opinions on the issue. I also appreciate the prerogative of the Governor to convey his views. However, I am shocked and surprised to know that the letter of the Governor was released to the media and the kind of language used,” the NCP chief wrote.

On Monday, Koshyari wrote a letter to the Chief Minister questioning the government’s decision to keep the places of worship closed in Maharashtra. The Governor further questioned Thackeray’s commitment to Hindutva and mocked him for turning ‘secular’.

“I wonder if you are recovering any divine premonition to keep postponing the reopening of the places of worship time and again or have you suddenly turned ‘secular’ yourselves, the term you hated?” Koshyari wrote.

Responding to this, Thackeray said that looking after the health and welfare of the citizens was his government’s primary duty and opening temples would not be feasible amid the COVID-19 outbreak. He further said that he doesn’t need any lessons or certificate in Hindutva from the Governor.

Conveying his views regarding the same, Pawar said that even the PM would have noticed the intemperate language that has been used. The word ‘Secular’ is added that equates and shields all religions and hence the Chair of the Chief Minister must uphold such tenets of the Constitution, he asserted.

“Unfortunately, the Governor’s letter to the Chief Minister invokes the connotation as if written to the leader of a political party,” Pawar said.
