80-year-old farmer Dharma Patil drank poison in Mantralaya asking for a compensation for his land. But he succumbed on January 28 in J J Hospital. Enraged son Narendra Patil declared that he will not take the father’s body in custody until the state government does not agree to give suitable money for his land and secondly his father should get the status of the martyred farmer.

Narendra Patil did a thiyya andolan outside JJ Hospital saying that he would not take his father’s body in custody. At first, state government officials did not respond but when politicians of opposition parties started criticising, the officials agreed to his demands and gave him assurance in writing. After he received the letter, Narendra Patil took his father’s body into custody and left for Dhule for final rites.

Project affected farmer Dharma Patil used to visit Mantralaya for the last three years asking for right compensation of his land. But he was not entertained. Finally, on January 22, he tried ending his life by drinking poison. However, after fighting for 6 days, he died on January 29.

Late Dharma Patil’s relatives are blaming that he did not die but the state government killed him. His relatives demanded a compensation and accordingly, Energy Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule assured Narendra Patil that he will give a compensation in the next 30 days.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called Narendra Patil over the phone and promised to take strict action against the accused.
