Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam accused Maharashtra Environment Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar on Saturday of not only being involved in the killing of Tigress Avni but also of a nexus between the hunters and the minister. After this, Mungantiwar expressed dissatisfaction over the accusations and said that he will file a defamation case against Nirupam.

Since Mungantiwar came into power, there has been an increase in the number of tiger deaths. In the year 2016, almost 16 tigers were killed while in the year 2017, almost 21 tigers were killed. However, between 2008 to 2015, almost 14 tigers were killed.

Nirupam said that there has been no action taken against the hunter mafia because Mungantiwar and hunters have a nexus. While accusing the state environment minister, Nirupam asked Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to sack Mungantiwar from the cabinet.

On November 11, 2018, a rally was carried out from Worli Seaface to Shivaji Park, against the murder of Tigress Avni.
