On the occasion of 71st Republic Day, Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government on Sunday launched its ‘Shiv Bhojan’ scheme. Under this scheme, a meal will be provided for just ₹10.

The ‘Shiv Bhojan Thali’ was a poll-promise made by Shiv Sena before the Maharashtra assembly elections held last year.

The scheme has been launched on a pilot basis and the lunch ‘thali’ will be available at designated centres (Shiv Bhojan canteens) during a specific time, which is 12:00 pm to 2:00pm.

Maharashtra Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal had earlier informed that each canteen will be able to provide 75 to 150 meals for lunch. However, the officials confirmed that each canteen can serve at least 500 lunch plates.

Moreover, the same will be provided on a first-come-first-serve basis between the specified time of 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM.

Bhujbal had also clarified that it is not required to produce Aadhaar card to avail the ‘Shiv Bhojan Thali’. Under the pilot scheme, at least one canteen has been started at district headquarters.

In Mumbai, district guardian minister Aslam Shaikh inaugurated the ‘Shiv Bhojan’ canteen at Nair hospital run by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

Mumbai suburban district guardian minister Aditya Thackeray also unveiled a similar canteen at collector’s office in Bandra.

The aim of the scheme (Shiv Bhojan) is to provide affordable and quality food to all, irrespective of caste, creed, religion and financial status,” Maharashtra Tourism Minister Aditya Thackeray tweeted.
