The 60th Foundation Day of the Shiv Sena was overshadowed by renewed tensions between its two rival factions, as speculation surrounding the possible defection of six Lok Sabha MPs dominated political discussions. The anniversary, which would traditionally have been used to celebrate the party’s legacy, was instead transformed into a platform from which competing visions of the organisation’s future were presented.

At a major gathering held in Mumbai, an emotional appeal was made by Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray. A willingness to relinquish leadership was expressed if confidence among party workers was found to be lacking. The importance of trust between leadership and cadre was emphasised, while reassurance was provided that responsibilities would not be abandoned during challenging times. Strong support was subsequently demonstrated by party workers, through slogans and public expressions of loyalty.

Sharp criticism was directed at six MPs whose names have been repeatedly linked to a possible crossover to the Shinde-led Shiv Sena. It was argued that electoral victories had been secured through the influence of Balasaheb Thackeray’s legacy and the backing of the party organisation. Allegations of betrayal were raised, and party workers were encouraged to question leaders who were perceived to be abandoning the mandate provided by voters.

Concerns regarding the broader political environment were also voiced. Warnings were issued that excessive concentration of political power could weaken democratic institutions. Suggestions were made that opposition forces may eventually need to unite against what was described as growing political dominance by the BJP.

Meanwhile, a contrasting message was delivered at a separate event organised by Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. His 2022 rebellion was defended, and arguments were presented that political succession should be determined by adherence to ideology rather than family lineage. Balasaheb Thackeray’s legacy was claimed on behalf of party workers who, according to Shinde, remained committed to the founding principles of the organisation.

Criticism was also directed at the Sena (UBT) leadership. An excessive focus on individual leadership was questioned, while collective decision-making was promoted as the path forward. Political opponents were mocked through a series of sharp remarks, and confidence was expressed that further developments in Maharashtra’s political landscape were yet to unfold.

Particular attention was drawn to the absence of six MPs who have been associated with ongoing defection rumours. Their non-attendance at the Foundation Day programmes was widely interpreted as a sign that significant political decisions may be under consideration. As a result, speculation regarding another major split within the Sena ecosystem was further intensified.

With both factions invoking Balasaheb Thackeray’s legacy and presenting themselves as the authentic custodians of the Shiv Sena’s ideology, a prolonged political contest appears to be underway. The Foundation Day celebrations were therefore marked less by unity and more by a visible struggle over leadership, loyalty and the future direction of one of Maharashtra’s most influential political movements.
