Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi (VBA) chief Prakash Ambedkar on Friday met Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to oppose the decision of Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government to appoint administrators to gram panchayats.

Ambedkar attacked the Maharashtra government saying that his party opposes the administrator appointment to gram panchayats. He alleged that the government is misusing the ordinance while saying that for this government corona means ‘drama’.

The VBA chief demanded that the current period of tenure of gram panchayats should be extended by six months if the elections can’t be held. He said that the appointment of administrators to gram panchayats was not correct.

“The government wants to appoint administrators to gram panchayats whose tenure has ended. However, this is not correct and we are completely against it. The elections should be held and if this can’t happen, the current period of tenure of gram panchayats should be extended by six months,” Ambedkar asserted.

He further stated that as per the Indian constitution, the person who takes the oath of the office can be called as an administrator. However, Ambedkar told the Governor that those who are being appointed as administrators are party workers.

Meanwhile, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis has also objected to this decision and has written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray to withdraw the order suggesting to appoint administrators to 14,000-gram panchayats.

On July 13, state Rural Development Minister Hassan Mushriff issued a GR allowing the appointment of Zila Parishad chief executive officers (CEO) as the administration to 14,000 gram panchayats.

The order states that the Zila Parishad CEO can be appointed as administrators to the gram panchayats in consultation with their respective district guardian ministers.
