Women from the Maratha community are demanding the removal of criminal cases registered against Maratha protestors by the state. If cases against stone pelters in Kashmir were retrieved, why can't the Maharashtra government do the same for Maratha protestors? questioned protesting women activists sitting at Azad Maidan on Thursday.

Earlier, Maratha community’s agitation demanding reservation took a violent turn leading to arrests of several protestors and criminal cases were registered against them.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assured to withdraw the criminal cases registered against the agitators. However, the state government has failed to follow on their promise. Thus, the women activists have been protesting to press their demands.

We are aware that the issue regarding Maratha reservation is in the jurisdiction of court. However, for our demand to remove criminal cases against the Maratha protestors, that can be fulfilled by the CM, we have called for this protest. We want the CM to take strong action against the police who assaulted the youth involved in earlier protests,”  Protestor Rupali Patil clarified.

In Parbhani, the police rushed in the houses of women activists and physically assaulted them,” alleged Rupali Patil.

What are their demands?

  • All the criminal cases registered against the Maratha protestors, during the Maharashtra Bandh, shall be withdrawn. However, the women protesters say that cases registered against those involved in Walunj and Chakan incidents can be exempted.
  • Annasaheb Patil Foundation Development Corporation’s loan scheme shall be implemented at the earliest, excluding mortgage and civil issues, only for the Maratha community.
  • Students of Maratha community should be given a 50 per cent waiver under the Rajashri Shahu Maharaj Shiksha Yojana scheme.
  • For the 32 people who have sacrificed their lives, Maharashtra government should provide ₹50 lakh cash to their families and government service for one of the family members.
