Women will head 15 municipal corporations in Maharashtra following the state government’s reservation draw for mayoral posts. Major cities, including Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur, are among those where the mayor’s position has been reserved for women, highlighting increased female representation in urban local governance.
However, the decision has triggered political controversy. Shiv Sena (UBT) has alleged that the reservation process was altered arbitrarily to suit the ruling establishment. Party leaders claimed that long-standing norms and rotation rules were ignored, and that the reservations were decided according to the “whims of those in power.”
The state government has rejected the allegations, maintaining that the reservation draw was conducted transparently and in accordance with established rules.
