As the nationwide lockdown has been extended till May 3, Maharashtra Pubic Works Department (PWD) Minister Ashok Chavan on Tuesday said that it was high time to grant permission to the stranded migrant workers and labourers to leave for their respective hometown.

The senior Congress leader said that after their medical examination the state government will have to chalk out its plan to grant permission to the stranded migrant workers and labourers to leave for their homes, sooner or later.

“The migrant workers and labourers should be quarantined in their homes. We can draft a procedure and set up checkpoints at district borders. We will have to work out an action plan for granting permission to them so that they can leave for their homes,” said Ashok Chavan during a cabinet sub-committee meeting chaired by Maharashtra Deputy CM Ajit Pawar.

Chavan further suggested that the state government should start industrial activities in green zone districts along with the important projects of water resource and public works department.

“We should grant permission to start industrial units in green zone districts operating with 30 per cent attendance. Along with this, we should take efforts to launch projects of public works and water resource departments so that the workers can earn daily wage,” Chavan said in the meeting.

The Maharashtra government is planning to start the industrial process in parts of the state where not even a single COVID-19 case has reported.

Maharashtra Industries Minister Subhash Desai has asked his department to draft a proposal on how to restart industrial production in districts with no coronavirus cases.

Desai held a review meeting to examine the condition of industrial activity in the state and suggested that with agricultural activities being allowed to carry out, the farmers have got some relief.

“Similarly, permanent and contractual employees should also get some relief,” Desai stated.
