Maharashtra Minority Affairs Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader, Nawab Malik on Tuesday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has failed to address the distress of the urban poor.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday morning announced the extension of the nationwide lockdown till May 3 but failed to address the problems faced by the poor in cities, Malik said.

The NCP leader said that all schemes of Modi are designed for rural poor which has no relevance in the metropolitan cities. Modi has ignored the problems of the daily wagers and has no plan for providing them with a livelihood.

“I heard him (Modi) on March 24 and on April 14 again. Modi has failed to address the issues raised by the urban poor. All his schemes are designated for rural poor which has no relevance in metropolitan cities. He has ignored the problems of the daily wage earners and there is no plan for providing them livelihood,” Nawab Malik was quoted in a report by Times of India as saying.

Malik’s remarks come after thousands of migrant workers and labourers gathered in Mumbai’s Bandra West on Tuesday wanting to go back to their villages. This happened after PM Narendra Modi announced that the nationwide lockdown will remain till May 3.

The stranded workers gathered at Bandra (W) railway station and demanded the authorities to arrange transport means to send them back to their hometowns. However, the crowd was later dispersed as the police lathi-charged the migrant workers stranded in the city due to the nationwide lockdown.

The stranded workers were expecting that the lockdown will be lifted and they will be allowed to go home. However, with the increasing COVID-19 cases across the country, the nationwide lockdown was extended.
