Ahead of upcoming Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections, several senior Congress leaders in Mumbai demanded the removal of Sanjay Nirupam as Mumbai Regional Congress Committee (MRCC) President.

After the demise of senior leaders such as late Gurudas Kamat and Murli Deora, their supporters seek the removal of Sanjay Nirupam from the post alleging him for being biased against Kamat and his loyalists.

Congress leaders including former MP Eknath Gaikwad, MLA Nassem Khan, Bhai Jagtap, Baba Siddiqui, Amin Patel and others met All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary Mallikarjun Kharge and discussed to replace Nirupam with Milind Murli Deora for the post - Mumbai Congress President. In Congress party, the two factions – Kamat and Murli Deora supporters – have opened up about their stance against Sanjay Nirupam alleging him of being biased against Kamat supporters.

There was an internal rivalry between Kamat and Nirupam. After becoming MRCC president, Nirupam dominated Kamat group in party affairs distancing Kamat and Murli Deorao from the decisions. During the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections in January 2017, Nirupam denied tickets to Kamat’s supporters.

Nirupam Speaks

Asserting his loyalty towards Congress, Nirupam said that he will serve as Mumbai Congress President until the party's president Rahul Gandhi thinks otherwise.

I am a Rahul Gandhi loyalist and I have been appointed by him. He has ordered me to fight for the issues of the people of Mumbai, it is my duty to carry out that responsibility, and every second day, I am on the streets to fight for Mumbaikars," Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam said.
