After Bombay High Court heard the petition against Maratha reservation, Advocate Gunaratna Sadavarte was attacked by a person named Vaidyanath Patil. The attack happened outside the high court while Sadavarte was speaking to the media. 

Patil came and attacked the advocate shouting slogan, “One Maratha, Lakh Maratha (Ek Maratha, Lakh Maratha)”. Advocate Jayshree Patil and Gunaratna Sadavarte filed the petition in Bombay HC demanding to cancel the 16 per cent reservation to Maratha community saying that it violates the Supreme Court’s order.

After the attack, Patil was arrested and taken into custody by Azad Maidan police in South Mumbai. Bombay HC ordered security for the two petitioners and advocates. During the attack, Sadavarte’s colleagues tried to save him and lashed out on Vaidyanath Patil.

Sadavarte informed the media that after the petition was filed, he received multiple threats over the phone and this was the first physical attack on him over this matter. Sadavarte registered a complaint with Bhoiwada Police.
