While several youngsters are glued to PUBG or binge-watching web series, this 19-year-old girl from Thane happened to travel to Ladakh and back in just 16 days. In an age where keyboards are regarded as a flagbearer of feminism, Thane’s Kanaka Shetty went on a Ladakh trip with her two male friends and possibly might have even created a Guinness World Record.

With a mindset of, ‘Why should boys have all the fun?’, Shetty decided with her two friends to take the trip to Ladakh just one year after she got her own motorbike. While her feat may seem a really ordinary thing but before you get judgmental, her journey depended on a number of factors which describe what Shetty did was eventually a difficult task. For example, she travelled 6,000 km crossing valleys, bumpy roads, rivers to Ladakh and back in just 16 days.

Shetty travelled to Ladakh on the Thane-Udaipur-Hisar-Chandigarh-Katra- Banihal- Drass -Leh- Khardung La- Pangong Lake- Jispa-Manali-Amritsar- Bhatinda- Udaipur-Thane route. Speaking about her inspiration to take up the challenge, Shetty said,

Gender discrimination irritates me. I mean if the boys can do it, girls can too. Many people think that bike riding is only for men but I have proved them all wrong with the Thane-Ladakh journey.”

Shetty was drawn to two-wheelers from a young age and by the time she was 11 years old, she had learnt to drive two-wheelers with ease except for motorbikes. Shetty was taught by her friends Pratik Masurkar and Darshan Raghunath to ride a motorbike. Eventually, Shetty joined the ‘Riding and Tourist Scouting’ group after which she decided to take the trip to Ladakh.
