Sports Authority of India will be renamed to Sports India: Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore

In its 50th general body meeting, it was announced that the Sports Authority of India was set to be renamed 'Sports India'. However, the press release made by the body consisted of no such detail.

On Wednesday, Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore announced at the 50th general body meeting about renaming Sports Authority of India (SAI) to Sports India. The decision comes after 34 years of the SAI, which was established in 1984.


Sports Authority of India is being renamed. The word authority is being removed. It will be known as Sports India now,” Rathore said after the meeting.

The sports body also decided that the coaches will have a say on making decisions and alongside, the food expenses of athletes will also see a hike. SAI was also advised to include reputed companies in the hospitality sector for managing the residential and the food facilities under the SAI Residential Scheme.

The release further added, “It was emphasised that the highest quality of food and nutrition which is appropriate to the development of athletes at various levels should be ensured and there should be zero compromise on this issue.”

Indian Men’s Hockey coach, Harinder Singh had recently displayed his agony over the shockingly low level of hygiene at SAI’s centre in Bengaluru after which the food level came under the scanner.

SAI also plans to enter a public-private partnership with fitting agencies to develop the standards, utilise extra land unused by athletes in order to make it accessible to the general public for new facilities. The governing body also has decided to strengthen the engineering wing in SAI to complete this activity.

To provide support to Mission Olympic Cell, the Secretariat for Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) was also approved in the meeting.
