Ola took the wraps off its much anticipated electric scooters, the S1 and the S1 Pro on Sunday, August 15 in Bengaluru. The company said that the scooters will be available to buy on its portal starting September 8 while the first deliveries are expected by October. Ola said it will bring the scooters to 1,000 cities and towns across India.

These scooters will be produced at Ola’s plant in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, which the company said has a production capacity of up to 1 million vehicles. Ola said that it has received over one lakh pre-bookings for the scooter within 24 hours. The company is optimistic that it will meet the demand illustrated by the pre-bookings.

Pricing

The entry-level S1 will cost ₹99,999, whereas the more advanced S1 Pro will cost Rs 1,29,999. Although the scooters miss out on state subsidies, they are eligible for FAME II subsidies.

Features

The Ola S1 will feature a 2.98 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery capable of running at least 121 kilometres on a full charge. This scooter’s top speed will be capped at 90 kmph, however.

Meanwhile, the S1 Pro boasts of an upgraded 3.97 kWh battery providing a range of 181 kilometres and a top speed of 115 kmph.

Ola said that the S1 and S1 Pro will be equipped with features like reverse mode and hill-hold assist. The two scooters will also offer keyless unlock/lock, the ability to create multiple user profiles, and dedicated mood settings that can change the display graphics.

Founder and CEO at Ola, Bhavish Aggarwal said, “The S1 and S1 Pro are industry-leading products with best in class range, speed and cost,” said. “We have seen demand for this vehicle from everywhere, and obviously from the bigger cities as well, as scooters are an urban mobility product.”

While Aggarwal acknowledged that customers may achieve up to 85 per cent of the specified range in real-world situations, he pointed out that this was still a significant upgrade over the competition.

While Ola isn’t the first to launch an electric scooter in India, it has managed to undercut rival offerings from the likes of Ather Energy, Bajaj Auto, and TVS Motors while also promising a better range.

“Only around 160 million people in India today own a two-wheeler and that will increase significantly. While we need our people to own mobility solutions, we can’t let that be petrol vehicles. The only way out is to accelerate this electric journey and that’s the vision which we started Ola Electric with,” Aggarwal said.
