In a welcoming news, all women commuters across the state from today, March 17, will get 50 per cent discount on ticket prices for all types of buses operated by Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC).
This announcement was made as part of the state’s budget for the year 2023-24 and will be implemented through the newly introduced “Mahila Samman Yojana” scheme. The reimbursement for the scheme will be provided by the government to the corporation.
This move by the government is aimed at promoting women’s mobility and encouraging their participation in various sectors of society.
It is expected to benefit a large number of women who use public transport on a daily basis for their commute to work or for other purposes.
The discount will also help reduce the financial burden on women, particularly those from economically weaker sections, who frequently use ST buses for travel.
It is pertinent to note that the ST already provides discounts ranging from 33% to 100% on ticket fares to different sections of the society.
For those unversed, the government had previously announced a free travel discount for senior citizens who completed 75 years and a 50% discount for senior citizens aged between 65 to 75 years on all types of ST buses as part of the Amrit Mahotsav of Independence celebrations.
Discount to be provided on these types of ST buses:
Ordinary Bus
City Bus
Semi Luxury (Hirakani)
Midi Bus
Shivneri-Ashwamedh
Shivshahi AC Seater
Ordinary Sleeper Seater
