Now, a section of Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST)’s wet lease drivers has planned to take a peaceful morcha to Wadala bus depot on May 6 under the banner of transport body workers’ union. The reason for the strike is attributed to the delay in salary payments.

This development came after they went on a flash strike for two days recently. This strike had negative ramifications on the bus operations during the peak hours in the morning, considering not even one single wet-lease bus functioned.

BEST Union leader said that the primary demand of these drivers is that they be given salaries and facilities such as free bus passes at par with the full-time drivers of BEST undertaking.

Under the laws for contract workers, it is mentioned that in cases where the workman employed by the contractor performs the same work as those directly employed, the wage rates, holidays, hours of work, and other conditions of service should be at par.

BEST officials said these were private company employees and it was not possible to bring them at par.

Earlier, on April 21 and April 22, drivers of wet-lease of the BEST buses went on a flash strike.

On the other hand, MSRTC staffers have been on strike since October last year demanding that the state-owned corporation be merged with the Maharashtra government.
