Central Railway (CR) announced that food vending machines will soon be installed within its suburban railway stations. As per the authorities, a total of 19 vending machines will be placed in stations like Chinchpokli, CSMT (Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus), Currey Road, Ghatkopar, Kalyan, Kurla, Mulund, Parel, Thane, and Vidyavihar railway stations.
CR officials mentioned that the machines will be operational by December and consist of ready-to-eat snacks, chocolates, juices, water, and other consumables. This move comes as in-person food stalls are expected to be closed in the foreseeable future.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager at Central Railway, Robin Kalia said - “Food vending machines will be available at all major stations. The stations and platforms where the space for a food stall is small, vending machines can easily be available.”
“Even after train services resume, food stalls are likely to remain shut. That will be done in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Food vending machines will be of help for suburban passengers,” a senior official from the Central Railway said.

The railway body is looking to bring food vending machines to more stations in the city at a later date. Separately, CR has also introduced health-based vending machines that can offer face masks, hand sanitizers and hand gloves.
These machines are complemented by health kiosks where people can check blood pressure, blood sugar, body mass index (BMI), oxygen saturation, weight, as well as body hydration levels. Such kiosks can be spotted in Kalyan, Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, and Thane railway stations.
