The earlier name of the station, Elphinstone Road was named after Lord Elphinstone, Governor of the Bombay Presidency from 1853 to 1860. After the notification of change of name has been issued, the work of changing the board at this station will now be started. As per the reports, it will take about a week to complete all the renaming formalities.

Maharashtra Legislature had approved the change of names for both the stations last year in the month of December.

They aren't going to rest after this change, some other stations are in the pipeline to be renamed. Charni Road could be Girgaum, Grant Road could be Gamdevi, Cotton Green to Kalachowki, Reay Road to Ghodapdeo.

Shiv Sena didn't want stations to carry "colonial" names and hence this initiative was taken forward.
