Union Minister of state for Railways Raosaheb Danve Patil on Friday, April 29, announced that the fare of AC local trains will be reduced by up to 50 per cent. However, no changes will be made to the prices at which railway passes are sold in such trains, he clarified.

The minister made these statements at the inauguration event of the newly renovated Byculla railway station in the presence of Maharashtra Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis.

Elaborating further, he stated that the existing minimum fare of INR 65 for a distance of 5 km will be reduced to INR 30.

This might be a relieving news for Mumbaikars amid the scorching heat and rising day temperatures, which are likely to further increase in May.

Meanwhile, Danve did not specify from when the revision in fares will come into force. He, however, mentioned that once the Central government gives a green signal, it will soon come into effect.

Moreover, this development came in order to attract the passenger rush as the city jumps to back normalcy after two years of fighting the novel coronavirus pandemic.

He also exclaimed that it was a long-pending demand of the public to reduce the fares of air-conditioned local trains in Mumbai and they had received suggestions to reduce the existing fare by at least 20-30 per cent.

Earlier, it was observed that the AC local trains received a lukewarm response owing to the high ticket fare and low frequency. Though, travellers of the local trains in the Western Railways (WR) are reportedly drawn towards air-conditioned trains amid soaring temperatures in the city.

Besides, last year, the Railways had conducted an online survey to know more about the public’s opinions on the AC locals on the Mumbai suburban network. Its survey also did not received much response either at that point of time. However, railway officials cited lockdown-induced pandemic as the reason.
