Maharashtra Transport Minister Anil Parab said that the local train services for the general passengers will be started only after seeing everything properly. If the train services are started for general passengers, the number of coronavirus cases are likely to increase, he added.

“The number of coronavirus cases is increasing rapidly in Mumbai and surrounding areas and if the general public is allowed to travel on local trains, it will further increase the number of COVID-19 patients. The local train services will not start for a few more days,” Parab said on Monday.

The minister further said that the government will allow the general public to travel via local trains only after taking precautionary measures and taking stock of the situation. The government is unlocking in phases and has started the local train service in a staggered manner, Parab said.

“The local trains will be allowed to operate fully after taking care of everything. The coronavirus cases are increasing and they will further increase if the general public is also allowed. The number of train trips has also been increasing. We are unlocking in phases,” he said.

Meanwhile, Raj Thackeray-led Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) on Monday protested against the Maharashtra government by travelling in the local train from Shelu and Neral without permission. The MNS has been demanding the reopening of local train services for general passengers.

Four MNS leaders including Sandeep Deshpande were arrested on Tuesday by the crime branch of Mumbai Police for defying the lockdown rules.
