The long-awaited BKC-Chunabhatti flyover was recently inaugurated for public use. However, MMRDA is not allowing two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws to ply in this flyover, In addition to this, trucks and trailers have been barred from using the bridge, but BEST and other tourist buses can use the flyover.

It is being said that the decision to allow trucks and two-wheelers will come after the authorities have done a though study of the traffic. Traffic police commissioner Madhukar Pandey explaining the reason for this shared that, “There is a sharp curve as the flyover bends near Chunabhatti and the parapet wall is lower near Sion and we feel that these areas might be accident-prone for these vehicles”.

He further mentioned that when JJ flyover was made operational, two-wheelers were allowed on the same but due to over speeding and reckless driving there were a lot of accidents and they had to close the flyover then. So they are threading with caution in regards to BKC-Chunabhatti flyover. They are open to revising the decision but only after they have evaluated all the pros and cons.

MMRDA officials have said that they have no role in restricting the vehicles on the flyover and the decision regarding this rests with the Traffic police. The reason why the motorists are creating a fuss about being allowed to use the BKC-Chunabhatti flyover because it cuts down the commute time by almost 30 minutes.

There are a few commuters who feel that while they are ok with 2 wheelers and truck being restricted on BKC-Chunabhatti flyover but auto-rickshaws should be allowed to ply on the same.
