Every year, Mumbai get ready to welcome monsoon with a big cheer but with that also comes the problems of waterlogging. Despite taking necessary efforts, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been unable to resolve the prevailing issue of waterlogging. However, the issue might get worse for Mumbaikars as well as the civic body, as the nationwide lockdown is in place till May 3.

Every year BMC carries out pre-monsoon work to make sure that the streets may not get jammed. However, this year the work has been delayed due to the lockdown. The BMC recently announced that it has finished the work in the majority of areas across the city which are likely to get clogged. However, since the civic body had to face an untimely interruption in the work, it claims that as many as 40 areas in Mumbai might face waterlogging this year.

The civic body prepares a list of potential areas every year that are prone to waterlogging. This year, the BMC had enlisted 289 areas and started working in these areas. By the time lockdown was announced, BMC had managed to complete work at 223 of these spots and had almost completed work at 24 places. However, the BMC is unsure about the completion of work in 40 areas.

Since many parts of Mumbai are below sea level, waterlogging occurs during high tide every monsoon. Taking that in consideration, the BMC under its Brihanmumbai Storm Water Disposal System (BRIMSTOWAD) project, had decided to install water pumps at eight spots to drain excess water, construct new water drains and increase the capacity of existing drains.
