Mumbai's water comes from dams holding 1,40,202 million litres. The annual demand is 14,47,363 million litres. However, an additional 1,37,000 million litres and 91,130 million litres will also come from the Bhatsa Dam and the Upper Vaitarna Dam, respectively.

In August 2015, there was a 20 per cent water cut due to unpredictable rainfall, and large users like companies and hotels faced a 50 per cent cut.
As per a report by TOI, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has also announced that it will reduce water supply by one day per week. In Panvel, water will be supplied on alternate days. So far, the authorities of Thane and Kalyan-Dombivli have not enforced any similar actions.
