On Monday, November 8, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that the navigation span under Coastal Road-Bandra Worli Sea Link interchange is sufficient.

The civic body said this in response to Worli fisherfolks claims where they mentioned that the distance between the two pillars is 60 meters is insufficient.

The civic administration also said that they consulted affected fisherfolk societies of Worli before obtaining a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the fisheries department and coastal regulatory zone (CRZ) clearance from the Union environment ministry for the project. However, the protesting fisherfolks have denied the BMC's claims.

BMC, while referring to the Bureau of Indian Standards' Code of Practice for Design of Ports and Harbours, said that the coastal road project has a navigation span of 60 meters. It is almost double prescribed the navigation span.

As per the Bureau of Indian Standards' Code of Practice for Design of Ports and Harbours, the navigation span has to be 5 times the width of the boat for a single carriage. For a double carriage, it should be 8 times the width of the boat.

The civic body also added that they have appointed the Tata Institute of Social Sciences to develop a policy to compensate the fishermen for losses incurred during the construction of the project.

Meanwhile, the fisherfolks said that the two fishing societies of Worli were not consulted for their suggestions before obtaining the NOC. They also stated that their primary demand is to redesign the interchange and that even though compensation is important, it is not their main demand.
