Not many of us know, but the city of Mumbai is developed on the Mithi river, and as per the information mentioned in the reports over the years, the river is highly polluted due to the waste that is thrown in different channels.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) appointed a contractor in the month of March to clean up the polluted river. However, the contractor instead of cleaning the river, ladened it with debris, alleged corporator Milind Vaidya who asked police officers to seize the vehicle owned by the contractor.

The Mithi river flows between Mahim police quarters and Machhimar colony. Corporator Milind Vaidya found out that the debris was being dumped near police quarters building no 7,8 & 9.

When local corporator Milind Vaidya asked the contractor about debris, he said that the ramp is being constructed. This did not convince Vaidya who further mentioned that the contractor was trying to kill mangroves and so he took the keys of their vehicles into custody and filed a police complaint.

Generally, Mithi river is cleaned in April-May and I found it fishy when I saw people cleaning up the river in the month of December. Upon enquiring, we understood that the tender was alloted to Mukesh Construction company. We asked him to show the papers but he showed us the old papers. We enquired about the tender and the company with the deputy chief engineer of water supply department, he said he has no idea about it,” Milind Vaidya, corporator.

No further updates about the same have been received yet.
