According to reports, the Maharashtra government will not immediately impose a lockdown, but will instead put in force additional restrictions to fight the rise in COVID-19 cases and Omicron variant in the state. It is anticipated that the government will issue fresh guidelines by Wednesday, January 5, night, claimed accounts. 

On Wednesday morning, a meeting was chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar at the Mantralaya in the presence of Public Health Minister, Rajesh Tope and other senior bureaucrats who took stock of the prevalent condition.

Post the conclusion of the meeting, Pawar took to Twitter and elaborated, "A meeting was held today to review the current status and measures of the new corona virus in the state. As experts have warned that the spread of Corona virus in the state will increase rapidly, necessary steps should be taken to keep the situation under control".

He further added, "The number of corona infections in the state is increasing and the number of tests should be increased with emphasis on contact tracing to control it."

Based on accounts, Pawar is anticipated to brief Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray about the meeting's outcomes after which new curbs guidelines will be made. Additionally, various issues faced by the diverse government departments were discussed. It was also decided to seek the state COVID-19 task force's view to resolve the problems to enable the effective management of coronavirus cases in the state.

It is believed that fresh restrictions will be put in place to curb the spread of the virus. On Monday, Maharashtra reported 18,466 new COVID-19 cases of which 10,860 were from Mumbai. Moreover, 75 new Omicron cases were also registered. Amid the rise in cases, schools in Mumbai from grades 1 to 9 and 11 have been shut till January 31.
