The collective water stock in the seven lakes of Mumbai stood at just nearly 60 per cent of the required quantum despite the immense heavy rainfall across the city.

According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) report, the water stock in the seven lakes, supplying water to Mumbai, reached at 58.93 per cent till 6am today, July 26. The water stock in the lakes was 8,52,957 million litres, against the total capacity of 14,47,363 million litres, the BMC said.

Owing to this, the civic body stated that the 10% water cut will continue at least till the month-end as the water stock is lower than in the past two years. Last year, on the same date, it stood at 90%.

However, it is pertinent to note that three (Vihar, Tansa, Tulsi) out of seven lakes have been overflowing.

Total stock as on July 26 (in million litres)

Upper Vaitarna: 71,329

Modak Sagar: 1,13,056

Tansa: 1,44,946

Middle Vaitarna: 1,31,503

Bhatsa: 3,56,378

Vihar: 27,698

Tulsi: 8,046

With five days left in the month, meteorologists said it could cross 1,502mm recorded in 2020, which was the highest ever for the month. The ongoing wet spell has already given 1,348mm of rainfall in July, which is the highest for the month in three years.

So far this season, IMD's Santacruz observatory has recorded 1,897mm rain, of which 550mm was in June.

The weather department stated that monsoon conditions are already active and the city can expect moderate to heavy rainfall till July 27-28.

In 2005, when the city received 944mm in a single day on July 26 leading to a deluge in which more than 1,000 people died, it recorded a total of 1,454.5mm rainfall for the month.
