Data on face masks in Mumbai which was imposed in April 2020 and was recently lifted last week, highlights that nearly, 46 lakh people were fined and INR 92 crore was collected as fines from those flouting the norms, highlighted a report by the Times of India.

The city has now stopped fining those without face masks. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elaborated on how its clean up marshals will not fine anyone INR 200 for not wearing face masks from Friday. After the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, the civic authority had made it mandatory to wear face masks in public areas.

The Maharashtra government recently revoked all the coronavirus restrictions, thus, they withdrew the Disaster Management and Epidemic Act for COVID-19 management in the state. Later, state public health minister Rajesh Tope declared that wearing masks is now voluntary. Nonetheless, the public has been urged to use masks while they are in crowded or public areas.

In light of these ease in restrictions, there is no longer any requirement for being fully vaccinated to travel in public transport and in public places like malls and theatres.

In an order issued in March, the Centre also revoke the measures enforced under the Disaster Management Act for the COVID-19 containment measures. However, the advisories on the containment measures state that the utilization of face masks and hand hygiene will continue to be enforced.
