As many as 7,565 passengers have died in the last three years after falling from suburban trains. In response, Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik told the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday that the railway administration has been instructed to take immediate safety measures. He also announced the formation of a group to consider changes to private-sector working hours.

Legislators Atul Bhatkhalkar and Nana Patole had raised concerns regarding the recent accident in Mumbra. Sarnaik emphasized that passenger safety is a top priority. To reduce the burden on local trains, he said the expansion of the metro network is being prioritized.

He also mentioned that alternative transport options like water transport, air taxis, and ropeways are under consideration to ease travel for Mumbaikars. While railways fall under central jurisdiction, the state government is taking the issue of passenger safety seriously.

Following the Mumbra incident, the Chief Secretary convened a meeting with senior railway officials to plan further safety measures. Instructions have been issued to reduce congestion, manage station crowds, and prevent accidents during travel.
