The Indian Parliament unanimously passed The Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Seventh Amendment) Bill, 2021 on Tuesday. This would empower states and union territories to generate and maintain their list of socially and educationally backward classes (SEBCs).

This came in the backdrop of rising demand from the opposition to raise the cap on reservations. The opposition has also called for a caste census.

Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Rajya Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge said that the bill should have a provision wherein the states can offer reservations beyond the 50 per cent cap.

Shiv Sena joined DMK in calling for an increase in the reservation cap. Sena’s Sanjay Raut also took up the issue of Maratha reservation.

Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Virendra Kumar said the bill is historic and that it had unanimous support in the Lok Sabha.

Although the opposition was protesting the Centre’s farm laws and also against the alleged surveillance via Pegasus spyware, they decided to support the government in getting the bill passed.
