In tha last few years, cases of men giving triple talaq or an instant divorce to women via mobile phones and other means have increased. Many women organisations raised their voice as well to this harsh practice. It seems, the Central government heard the cries and have passed the order in the favour of women.
On Wednesday, September 19, 2018, the Union Cabinet approved an ordinance that seeks to make Triple talaq or instant divorce an offence. This move is considered as a major move towards women empowerment.

The Triple Talaq bill makes the pronouncement of talaq-e-biddat "void and illegal." According to clause 3 of the Bill, "Any pronouncement of talaq by a person upon his wife, by words, either spoken or written or in electronic form or in any other manner whatsoever, shall be void and illegal."
This Bill, which makes instant triple talaq or talaq-e-biddat a punishable offence, follows the Supreme Court judgment on August 22, 2017, in the case of Shayara Bano vs. Union of India.
