BMC fines 245 people in a restaurant in Breach Candy area for flouting COVID-19 norms

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday night, March 17, fined 245 people and lodged a complaint against them for not following the COVID-related protocols at a restaurant near Breach Candy Hospital in South Bombay.

In a special drive conducted amid rising cases of coronavirus in the city, BMC raided the Auber-gin plates and pours restaurant at Breach Candy area. During the raid, 245 persons were fined for not wearing masks. A complaint has also been filed against the violators in the Gamdevi police station. Moreover, an amount of INR 19,400 was collected as a fine from the violators.

A show-cause notice has been issued to the management of Auber-gin asking why they failed to impose COVID-19 safety protocol on their premises. The inspection was conducted by a team of officials from the D ward ( that comprises areas such as Breachcandy, Malabar hill, Napean Sea road).

Meanwhile, a day ago Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray issued a warning to the citizens to not force him to impose a state-wide lockdown amid a continuous spike in the coronavirus cases.

Speaking at a virtual meeting attended by representatives of hotel and restaurant associations, shopping centre groups, the CM ordered them to ensure strict adherence to COVID-related protocols in their premises like mandatory face masks and social distancing.

The meeting was called in the backdrop of reports that several malls and hotels had failed to adhere to COVID-19 guidelines.

The BMC Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal had last year announced some rules and started a campaign to ensure the rules are strictly followed keeping the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in mind. In order to inspect the same, pubs and restaurants in Mumbai are again being visited regularly by the officials.

On March 9, Mumbai Guardian Minister Aslam Shaikh had hinted that nightclubs in the city may be closed soon if the rate of increase in the number of patients remains the same. He also stated that it is possible that a night curfew may be imposed in the city.
