NMMC collects fine of INR 2.5 Crores from citizens flouting COVID-19 norms

The Maharashtra government in April imposed a statewide curfew under Break the Chain. Citizens have been instructed to strictly abide by the curfew rules to break the growing chain of coronavirus.

Since the lockdown was imposed in Maharashtra on April 14, the Special Vigilance Squad of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) took action against more than 12,000 people and establishments for not following the curfew and COVID-19 norms until May 23. The civic body also collected over INR 50 lakhs as a fine.

Over the last few days, the daily number of coronavirus patients in the NMMC area has been declining. In order to curtail the spread of COVID-19 infections, civic body officials are taking action against citizens who are violating the protocols.

NMMC’s special vigilance teams have taken punitive action against 12,416 citizens/shopkeepers during this period and recovered a penalty amount of INR 53,66,700. Out of these, in the APMC market, in each shift, 15 such teams have collected fines amounting to INR 9,37,900 from 3,187 persons/shopkeepers.

Apart from this, 31 special vigilance squads of NMMC and eight squads at the divisional office level in collaboration with the police department have taken action against 15,863 citizens and establishments for violating the restriction orders. A fine of nearly INR 69 lakhs has been recovered from them.

Meanwhile, the departmental vigilance teams have recovered INR 15,35,000 from 3,447 people for violating safety rules.

Besides, since April 2020, action has been taken against 54,489 citizens/establishments and recovered a fine of INR 2.5 crores.

During the curfew, shops of essential commodities are allowed to remain open between 7 am to 11 am. NMMC has ensured that the shops are closed after the allocated timings.

Moreover, the civic body officials also ensured there should be no overcrowding and the COVID-related norms such as wearing masks and social distancing are being followed. In addition, the morning walks and evening walks are also prohibited and punitive action is being taken against the citizens who leave the house for the same. NMMC conducts antigen tests for people who are seen roaming on the streets without a valid reason.
